They give pretty loose waves or curls depending on how long you keep them in. I am not african american but I am pretty sure these would work wonders w/ your hair.

For thin hair, I think like you should add in some tracks to make it look more fuller and have more volume.

You can use the basic rollers but roll your vertically almost like shirley temple.

and then you sit under the dryer for a while and then done pull them out, and tease your hair and add in some conditioner and some hair spray [not spritz].

Or use a big hot curler.

In all those pictures or atleast most of them their hair is naturally like that. If you want your hair like that all the time you could get a curly perm. This is just like a regular perm but instead of your hair being straightened it is curled. If you just want your hair like that sometimes go to a hairdresser and they should be able to help. well since your hair is thin get a weave my friend lashay she's african american too she has short hair she got a weave and her hair looked beautiful meening get like a weave that has curls...... nice links y the way!
